Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the EPF retirement calculator?
Enter your current age, monthly salary, current EPF balances across all three accounts (Akaun Persaraan, Akaun Sejahtera, Akaun Fleksibel), and your expected annual salary increment. Choose your retirement age (55, 60, or 65) and adjust the EPF dividend rate assumption. The calculator instantly shows your projected retirement balance and estimated monthly income.
How accurate is this EPF calculator?
This calculator uses the official EPF contribution rates (11% employee + 12–13% employer) and the post-May 2024 account split ratios (75% Akaun Persaraan, 15% Akaun Sejahtera, 10% Akaun Fleksibel). Dividend rates are user-configurable — historically EPF has paid between 5% and 6.75% annually. Results are projections based on your inputs and are not guaranteed. Always verify on kwsp.gov.my.
What is Akaun Fleksibel (Account 3)?
Akaun Fleksibel was introduced in May 2024. It receives 10% of each monthly contribution and allows members to withdraw at any time without restriction. This replaced the old Account 2 structure. The calculator shows what your Account 3 balance will be at retirement and lets you model withdrawal scenarios.
Can I still contribute to EPF if I work in Singapore?
Yes. Malaysian citizens and permanent residents working abroad can make voluntary contributions to EPF (i-Saraan scheme). You contribute directly without employer matching, but you still earn dividends and the contributions are tax-deductible in Malaysia (up to RM4,000 per year). The calculator has a self-employed/voluntary mode for this scenario.
What EPF dividend rate should I use?
EPF declares dividends annually. Historical rates: 2023 — 5.50% (conventional), 4.75% (Shariah); 2022 — 5.35%; 2021 — 6.10%; 2020 — 5.20%. A conservative planning assumption is 5.0–5.5%. The default in this calculator is 5.5%. Using 6% gives a more optimistic scenario.
What does the voluntary top-up feature show?
The calculator shows how much additional monthly contribution (beyond your mandatory EPF contribution) you would need to reach RM 1,000,000 at retirement. It also shows a comparison projection if you top up an extra 2% of salary voluntarily each month. This helps you understand the compounding impact of voluntary contributions.
Why does the calculator have retirement ages of 55, 60, and 65?
EPF allows full withdrawal at age 55 (Akaun Persaraan). Many members choose to leave the money invested until 60 or 65 since EPF continues to earn dividends. Each option shows a significantly different projected balance — staying invested until 65 instead of 55 can more than double your balance due to compounding.
What is the monthly drawdown calculation based on?
The monthly income figures assume you draw down your entire EPF balance over 20 or 25 years, earning a conservative 4% annual return on the remaining balance (similar to a fixed deposit or bond). This is the standard financial planning annuity formula. It does not account for inflation — adjust your expectations accordingly.
